Pakistan-based TV channels have since yesterday going apeshit about a certain arsehole from India who had claimed two days ago that the December 11, 2001 attacks on Parliament & the 16/11 terrorist attacks were the handiwork of India’s intelligence agencies (i.e. false-flag operations). The hawkish elements within Pakistan, not surprisingly ex-PAF officials, are now calling for such ‘claims’ to be investigated & tabled before the UNSC & ICJ so that India can be declared a terrorist state. These nitwits are also alleging that the 9/11 attacks in the US were the handiwork of a Christian-Jewish-Hindu axis against the Ummah, & that Pervez Musharraf had forever surrendered all claims on J & K when he publicly & officially vowed to never again let Pakistani soil be used for the export of militancy to India. It seems now that the most crucial issue for Pakistan is no longer J & K, but that of its water supplies from India. Watch the following:

To Mr.RA 13 & SUBIR: Now the skeletons are beginning to drop off the closet regarding the MiG-21. Read this:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Flying-MiG-21-violates-fundamental-right-to-life-officer-tells-HC/articleshow/21111456.cms

And thanks to the so-called big-bang reforms announced yesterday, it will now be possible for the private-sector to buy petrol from the state-owned oil production companies as well as ethanol from the private-sector & produce cheaper blended-fuel (at least 40% blended).

At last some one had the courage to hold the bull by the horns. Now it is the time to critically review the remnant stocks of the Mig-21's from the point of view of their further utility in the service based upon the concrete evidences created by themselves and their array of failures in recent days.

You have already clarified earlier that the Mig-21's were supposed to be retired already by 2011. Now they have become overdue.

I was always afraid that the Mig-21's will have to be replaced by none other than the Su-30MKI. What a costly proposition, but now it seems to be coming true. Delay in MMRCA was almost criminal and now it is more imperative that more and more Rafale shall be directly procured from the OEM.

Apart from the fuel, what are further advantages to India expected with the changing of the said FDI.

Mr. Ra 13 said...

Whom do you think is more dangerous to Israel - Iran or Pakistan.

Mr. Ra 13 said...

I am convinced with you that the Nexter Caesar 155/52 howitzer is the best gun available as on today. But do you somehow feel that India may not purchase it intentionally.

HI Prasun
If the alh cant mount a radar then the only option is to mount it on a mi-17 which will have enough space , clearance and endurance and also a lot of space for the radar operator as well. Why is it that the IA is not thinking on these terms ?.is it because they have the UAVs like searchers to take care of the Battle field recce? The heli can have the advantage of popping up any where nearby for a quick scan while the UAV has to be really far back to avoid being sot down.
I dont understand how the astra missile mk2 is going to have a range of double the existing one keeping the configuration the same ?.
There seems to be a ground launched version of the lahat fired from flame launcher that was the missile i was referring to.
in Many countries democracy failed as greed of power and money were the primary concerns of a lay man who suddenly was aware that he can also be a king like to days politicians in india and i have a feeling china will bribe the bhutanese to go their way , we have seen this too often in maldives , nepal ,Seychelles, etc
Even if the tejas gets a more powerful engine, when the airframe is lengthened and more weight added wont we have the same performance due to extra weight and drag?.

Sir, Vmt

1.GOI can invest in algae based biofuels-ethanol,bio-diesel. many commercial level plants utilisng algae in encloased reactoras and open fields are now under constructor or in operation. Many such companies are even offering green crude.

2.GOI can invest in building a no of such plants. They can be built in arid regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. They require just flue co2 stream which is readily available from the many thermal power plants in this belt.

3.Reducing our oil imports by even 10 perecnt will save a lot of revenue and can lead to rising of rupee against dollar.

4.Goi can also invest in less expensive 3rd gen biofuel production plant. They use anything celluslostic and mostly utilises leftovers after corn or other crops harvest, corn stubs, husk and thus doesnt compete with staple crops and fodder for livestock. Besides reducing imports and making us self dependent and less vulnerable these are all carbon neutral, will help to arrest global warming and climate change. Their long term usage will lead to a better future for the next gen. Monetarily it is invest once and use for a lifetime. Further it will be CDM project and will earn carvon credits.

5.A foreign energy company has come up with an innovative process of turning garbage into methane and other combustibles. Say with just 3/4th of the garbage daily deposited in Dhapa in Kolkata one can genrate 440-500 MW of electricity. Electricity out of garbage. Plus it will also earn carbon credits as its harnessing the metahne emissions which previously would find its way into the atmosphere .

6.Blending 40 perecnt of ethanol with petrol will require considerable changes to hardware in refineries. Ethanol deosnt exactly mix with petrol. Various additives are required. This has been the nly impediment to blending ethanol with petrol and uptil now all petrol are E10 nly except the ones in Brazil.

7.The serving wing commander who filed the petition with Delhi high court has also attributed his crash to a manufacturing defect and poor workmanship at HAL Ozar. So the prob isnt with MiG21 but with HAL.

8. Has the manufacturing qualities and the various QA/QC improved since then at HAL Ozhar. God nly knows how many such defects are there in the su fleet.

9.Cant we go for Lockheed Martin JAGM for Rudra or Brimstone latest variant. With just 7 km rang wont the host ac come within the engagement envelope ofManpads like Anza mk1 and 2 and Shorads?

10.Isnt the F-16 blk 52 being subjected to continuous upgrades and updates to softwares and mission sensors subcompnents. Going by that way Su30 are also nearly a decade old.

11.Pls tell what is the presnt role of Bisons. With just 4 aam it wont be able to intercept modern fighters which require salvoes of shots butb it will be effective against transport acs.

12.As the nos situation detoriates day after day wont it be imperative for MoD to increase the no of off the shelf deliveries and start establishment of the final assembly line of HAL tyo qquicken things up. IAF nad MoD officials seem to have adopted the Chalta Rahe attitude regarding this deal.

13.The latest crash was due to pilot error.

Pakistanis are different people. You point to them to attack someone and give them some reasons (madeup or real it doesn't matter), they will do the job. It all starts from the mind. They love violence and make belief. in UAE the arabs don't touch them after getting good beatings and use them as some sort of guards. The clever ones are in karchi (really indians). these ones seem to get lot of high positions.

Hi Prasun,

So what do you think is the possibility of Reliance Industries and Dassault forming a JV to build Rafale in India?

Can RIL handle all the production departments?

It will be very interesting to see indeed.

If Dassault RIL form a JV by, say, 2015, when will the first Rafale built in India be delivered? Any rough timeframe? I mean, how long do you think RIL will take to start the production line?

Hi Prasunda
Im back after a brief lull, hope I did not miss much.
1)Went through your links, must say its no surprise for the Pakistanis to claim foulplay in everything. And funny how the Muslims throughout the entire world tend to claim propaganda and find the entire world conspiring against their ummah. The main reason for this is the unwillingness of the Muslims to accept any wrongs as they believe they can't do any wrongs as they are the chosen ones of Allah to be sent to heaven while the rest burn in permanent Hell fire. The roots of ths can be found in the Quran itself. I doubt if Islam has anything to do with divinity and very much doubt that its just a Man made religion made to look like something divine through Prophet Muhammad.
2)Would the Akashdeep type of aerostats suffice for the kind of surveillance grid roles you outlined in your previous replies?
3)Time for a new thread.
Thanks a lot

Prasunda,
1) With recent allegations from an fellow Indian it is 'proved' that Hafiz Saeed was right who openly stated that India is no.1 terrorist nation. The 26/11 & parliament attacks r all Indian made.

Now why this kind of comments r expected from an responsible official. Is he paid by pakistan or US, or to gain some cheap publicity, or does he has become rogue & lunatic, or he has no faith in India or may be there r some truth in it. Is there no law where he is answerable for passing such irrevelant comments. Its an utter misuse for the Right to speach.

2) Yesterday it was confirmed that FDI in defence is fixed on 26% & not 49% but a provision remains for greater foreign stake after considering certain situations. Now why there is such confusion & no concrete decision in fixing the %. Clearly it is a loophole & the fact remains that higher FDI in arms deals can be achieved by bribing.

Robert Blackwill says that next Indo-Pak conflict could be in Afghanistan.

What is your take on this? Is it possible that Indian & Pakistani interests could clash leading to Pak-sponsered attack on Indian installations/projects in Afghanistan?

How will India respond to such events? Will we deploy forces to defend our investments in the area? Is there a possibility of armed conflict between Indian & Pakistan forces in such an instance?

Sir, The ejector racks from Cobham aerospace already selected for mk2, cant they go onboard mk1? Wasnt ELT-568 also shortlisted for deep upgrade of Su-30 fleet ?

How much time will it take for RIL to set up and commence op in a greenfield assembly and manufacturing plant for Rafale from the signing of JV with Dassault aviation? After such delays in indigenous products and license assembling of Russian fighter jets is Rm still actively considering import of 18 Rafales off the shelf even after the huge delays in Mmrca deal and the steady decline in fighter nos .

When Russia never shared the source codes of Sukhoi why is France willing to part with them? Is there any strategic implications of this .

Does the PDC concerns nly the optimisation of the internal bulkheads or returning back to the drawing boards for redesigning them. If they are redesigned then the whole ac structure will change and it will affect the airframe load bearing capability and stress limits. It had already been optimised keeping in mind the extreme flight envelopes and agility.

Earlier plans were drawn up for Brahmos block 2 deployment under Triservice command to guard Straits of malacca.

Sir, CCS today has cleared the mountain strike corps deal. It envisages induction of around 50000 troops for the strike corps.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/India-to-deploy-50000-additional-troops-along-China-border/articleshow/21127979.cms

What are your views on them ? Pls tell what is actually transpiring? What has CCS cleared? Will it be the creation of just a HQ element at Panagarh as you had earlier said or creation of a whole corps consisting of new divisons over and above the two already raised and currently deployed in Arunachal Pradesh.
Wont this strike corps have an independent armour and artillery brigade ?

Apart from C-130J will the MRTT also be based in Panagarh. Shouldnt the assets be dispersed instead of accumulating tghem in a single airbase?
Where will MoD get 60000 crore spread out over 5 years for raising the striuke corps? Instead of this wont it be better to raise a smaller force around 20000 and invest the rest in acquiring cutting edge weaponry.

Exactly how will the Indian citizen benfit from highre ethanol blending with petrol? Isnt ethanol expansive. From where will this etanol sourced? What will be the feedstocks. In this scheme will there be less burden on the state bearer and will it imporve our economy.

To 1978: That they’re dumb is a given. For they don’t realise that by blurting out various conspiracy theories they’re only glorifying India’s external covert action capabilities to unrealistic levels while on the other hand admitting that the ISI Directorate is terribly inefficient. For instance, one conspiracy theory being advocated by former Foreign Secretary Shamshad Ahmed Khan is that since in 2007 Barrack Obama had vowed to compel India to seek a negotiated settlement with Pakistan on the J & K issue, India had every motive for blunting this US desire & that’s why the 16/11 attacks were ‘staged’ by India. Another preposterous theory now being propounded is that Devid Coleman Headley was a ‘triple-agent’, i.e. working for both the CIA & R & AW. If one gores by such conspiracy theories, then the indisputable implication is that the much-vaunted ISI is terribly inefficient & all its staffers are duffers & buffoons. On the other hand, a minority group of sane-minded Pakistanis believe that the combine of non-state actors & the Pakistan Army have needlessly brought inside Pakistan all the prevailing ills of the Ummah & that the ruling elite of Pakistan already realised this in the 1990s & therefore decided to stash away their ‘insurance’ reserves abroad & consequently don’t give a damn about what happens to their country. The final nail in the coffin was laid by none other than the ex-ISI Chief who has stated that Pakistan is a failing, if not a failed state.

To Mr.RA 13: The core problem of the MiG-21 Bison happens to be the fuel-pumps of the R25-300 turbofan, similar to what’s been happening to the RD-33 turbofans of the MiG-29B. While for the former, new-build fuel-pumps are no longer available & therefore need periodic servicing & service-life extensions, for the latter new-build pumps are still available. Similarly, fuel-pumps for the R29B-300 turbofans powering the MiG-27M/UPG are also no longer in production. Consequently, there’s no other option but to decommission all the remaining MiG-21Ms & MiG-21 Bisons without any further delay & as a stop-gap measure, resurrect the MiG-27M re-engining project (& add aerial refuelling probes as well + install the DARIN-3 nav-attack avionics) so that at least 165 all-weather tactical strike aircraft are available for at least another decade along with 120 re-engined Jaguar IS/DARIN-3. Together, 285 of these upgraded strike aircraft along with 60 MiG-29UPGs will be a formidable battlefield air interdiction/tactical strike aircraft force for at least the next 15 years.
As for FDI, the GoI needs to give a strong push to attract international OEMs for setting up plants for producing blended fuel & marketing/selling it directly to international consumers, similar to what Brazil has achieved. In fact, India too should have started this process way back in the late 1970s. As for Israel, neither Iran nor Pakistan is dangerous from an existential standpoint as of now. Will analyse the MGS competition in-depth in a brand-new thread.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To RAD: For real-time battlefield surveillance the best bet is the MALE-UAV equipped with belly-mounted SAR, since such UAVs will have 15-hour non-stop endurance while a helicopter will have very limited endurance. Mind you, the Rudra helicopter-gunships will always rely on the LUHs for target detection & acquisition at close-quarters & therefore any miniaturised MMW radar is best on board the LUH & not on the Rudra. The ATGM that’s launched from the existing BDL-developed & built FLAME launcher is also the CALCM, but is called the SAMHO in this configuration. It is not the Lahat. The Tejas Mk2’s marginal increases in weight will be offset by higher engine thrust-levels. Greater wing-area will translate into more available control surface area reqd for better performance parameters in terms of manoeuvrability.

To SUBIR: 1) All those bio-fuel alternatives you’ve suggested are presently best-suited for only pilot-production levels for gated urban communities & require more financial investments for being viable on an industrial-scale for catering to state-level power consumption reqmts. 6) India needs to follow the Brazilian example for sure, & should have done so since the late 1970s itself. 7) The core problem of the MiG-21 Bison happens to be the fuel-pumps of the R25-300 turbofan, similar to what’s been happening to the RD-33 turbofans of the MiG-29B. While for the former, new-build fuel-pumps are no longer available & therefore need periodic servicing & service-life extensions by HAL, for the latter new-build pumps are still available. Similarly, fuel-pumps for the R29B-300 turbofans powering the MiG-27M/UPG are also no longer in production. Consequently, there’s no other option but to decommission all the remaining MiG-21Ms & MiG-21 Bisons without any further delay. 8) No matter how much one strives to improve one’s QC/QA levels, the fact remains that one cannot keep flogging a dead horse. 9) VSHORADS/MANPADS can be employed effectively only up to envelopes provided by the sighting/target acquisition optronics of the launcher & this has nothing to do with the missile round’s max range since no SAM flies straight like a crow towards its target. Instead, a parabolic trajectory in azimuth is adopted & therefore the missile’s max effective range will never exceed 4km at best. 10) All those F-16 upgrades do not apply to the PAF & there are severe limitations imposed on the PAF’s F-16s & their add-on sensors & EW pods & therefore all these MLU F-16 Block52s are only good for dropping PGMs during counter-insurgency operations & won’t stand a chance against either a Su-30MKI or MiG-29UPG. 11) MiG-21 Bison is a MRCA & it can also launch TV-guided PGMs. AAMs like R-73E or R-77 are never fired in salvoes & instead are used under the ‘one-shot one-kill’ principle & after they’ve been expended the Gsh-23 cannon takes over. 13) Too early to say. It could also have been hydraulic failure.

To SUJOY MAJUMDAR: From Israel, not Russia.

To ICEMAN: 1) About 800. 2) Yes, in future. 3) Not at all. How can one procure such weapons that have been rejected by even the Russian Navy? 4) Still undergoing flight-testing.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To GESSLER: It could well be a trilateral venture involving RELIANCE, HAL & Dassault Aviation. Of course ROL will be able to handle most if not all production depts., since the core reqmts as far as flight safety & product liability go concerns only the airframe & engines. HAL & BEL can easily licence-produce the various avionics as they have already been doing for the Su-30MKI & Jaguar IS/DARIN-3 & Mirage 2000UPG projects. Items like DFDR/CVR, IFF transponder, TACAN, ODL & RLG-INS of the Rafale are the very same as those on board the above-mentioned existing IAF aircraft. The Dassault Aviation-IAF JV can commence licenced-production from CKD kits by late-2016 ONLY IF the contract is inked by February 2014.

To ABS: 1) Problem is not the Holy Quran, but its deliberate misinterpretation by those that excel in politicising Islam, like the various Islamic Republics worldwide as well as the previous political dispensation in Egypt. All religious philosophies & teachings to date have been communicated through mortal human beings who have acted as the propagators. 2) Such surveillance grids have been in operation along the Durand Line for almost a decade now without any problem.

TRUTH88: Of course Rafael isn’t coming. But Rafale will come. Jaguars will carry on safely for at least another 15 years for sure.

To TONY STARK: It’s a free country & people are free to air their thoughts, provided they stand up for them & are held accountable. But that doesn’t mean all such utterances are the gospel truth that can be proven in a court of law. Regarding the 49% FDI, project approvals will be accorded on a case-by-case basis, just as it was in February 1998 when BrahMos Aerospace was created as a JV. But as more time goes by, reason will triumph over illogic & when that happens, 100% FDI will be allowed in the defence production sector.

To R S SWAMY: Such proxy wars began in the previous decade itself & that’s why the Indian Embassy in Kabul was attacked twice & Indian workers were beheaded as well, following which 2 ITBP Battalions were dispatched to Afghanistan for according protection to Indian installations & personnel stationed in that country. A direct clash between Indian and Pakistani military forces is not viable from a Pakistani standpoint, since Pakistan’s armed forces won’t remain viable beyond a week if the shit hits the fan in future. That’s because one must take into account the utter sense of helplessness prevailing within Pakistan’s populace due to the near-collapse/meltdown of Pakistan’s economy & total breakdown in the country’s law-and-order machinery. Under such circumstances, there will be many Pakistanis who won’t hesitate to become willing traitors for the sake of securing their future fortunes outside Pakistan. If India is smart enough, then she ought to manipulate the sectarian faultlines prevailing within Pakistan for her own benefit & in 2014 synchronise her ‘great game’ policies & strategies with those of Iran so that the indigenous, helpless & disenfranchised Shia populace of Gilgit-Baltistan can start demanding the merger of Gilgit-Baltistan with J & K as part of the Republic of India. Iran by all accounts will become a willing partner of India in such a venture, especially after the revelation about Sunni non-state actors of Pakistani origin now joining the Syrian rebels & fighting against the minority Shias of Syria. And since the polished likes of former Ambassador M K Bhadrakumar are too polite to indulge in such diabolical crystal ball-gazing, the door is therefore open for folks like me to visualise various future geo-strategic contingencies, don’t you think?

Now they’re cribbing & bitching about the fact that one in every three US State Department staffers is an Indian-American & that’s why the US’ pro-India tilt increases by the day. Another point that has come up is that India scores over Pakistan in Information Warfare everytime because India has more than 5 English-language TV broadcasting channels (through which India is better able to communicate with the rest of the world) while no such broadcasting channel exists in Pakistan.

I hope you are correct that Rafael will come. The reasons i am not so sure is: The markets expect rupee to get to 100 (currently 91) against the euro. If this happens we can kiss good bye to Rafael order for the next 2-3 years at the minimum. That will increase cost to beyond 100 million a plane, delay the induction to the end of the decade. Is it really worth it then?

I like your idea about Mig-27. It along with the Jags could indeed form the backbone for the next 10+ years.

Hi Prasun!
I really don't understand the logic of capping FDI in defence at 49%.
The GOI does't have any problem with importing the cutting edge of our defence from 100% foreign owned private companies based outside India but is scared of allowing those very companies from setting up production facilities in India, where they will use Indian raw materials and employ Indian manpower.

The best thing that happened for India was Pakistan turning out to be a Islamic state. All India needs to do is just sit on the fence with some pop corn and watch the tamasha unfold. It is amply clear from the history that India was just a imagined enemy of Pakistan, the real enemies were there own leaders and generals.Coups after coups, failed govts after other failed govts.

Pakistan has been the bitch of the Arabs,Americans, the British and now the Chinese.Everyone has used them for there own purpose, Pakistanis never questioned why,but thought that there were building up some grand alliance against India which included both the Muslim world and west. And when Americans offered nuclear deal to India, there leaders and there so called "experts" started farting that US had betrayed Pakistan, and that U.S was helping India fight Pakistan. Clearly showed that even their top generals from armed forces are one retarded fools. At one end they talk of deploying tactical nukes, at the other, nuclear deal with US. They demand to be treated equal to India at international stage, and when India starts to talk with them equally, that is,when India refuses to make any concession, they start farting with usual slogan that India is a big nation which acts small. And when India does make some concession in return for some assurance, responsibility and accountability, they start labeling India as hegemonic country.

1978 said...

Pakistanis have become so numb and dumb to the past reality that they don't even realize that the country which Jinnah brought freedom to was destroyed back in 1971,and logically speaking, the present day land of pure was formed in 1971.I never came across any sane person saying that soviet union survived after its collapse, nor will any Indian say that India "survived" if almost 50% of Indian population broke away from the Union and formed a separate nation, and yet,Pakistanis claim that they "survived" when almost 50% of the population formed a separate land different from the land of pure back in 1971.

To not to feel completely hopeless, they have now come up with brand new slogan, and it goes something like : " Pakistanis are the most talented and hard working people".Had it not been for Arabs,Americans,Chinese and IMF, that part of the land would have collapsed internally long back.I fail to see why every year the Pakistani govt fails to meet its target for tax collection when every year, the Pakistanis some where else send back almost more than 10 billion dollars every year, and that Pakistanis back home are getting richer by the money remitted, and yet they miss the target for tax collections.I don't know where to begin where to end, but Pakistanis are living on lot many myths, and when confronted with facts, they go into denial mode.

India was always destined to be a step ahead of Pakistan in all possible manner, its size, its economy, its military etc etc .... will always be leagues ahead of Pakistan.yet, they talk of bleeding India with thousand cuts, and call Indians "Pakistan obsessed".They have always poked their nose and tried destabilize their big brother(India)and believed that they could take out India. But later when they realized that this wont happen, they hit the "retardation" phase button and are now piling more nuclear weapons than India has.Indian PM quite clearly stated that India would never try to match the Chinese nuclear arsenal, and was a wise move by Indian leadership. But the other side, with hell lot of instability, lack of international credibility, with a very little economy, and highly unstable government has more nuclear weapons than India has,and plans to build even more at much faster rate.I just don't understand how the hell they keep day dreaming about better future after 2014 when all through this decade, they have committed one blunder after another, and tried to cover up those blunder with denials. They will only end paying for the blunders of past decade all through this decade, and more.

I once came across a danish military person who had served in Afghanistan, and he said that afghans always uttered one sentence, that if they ever make peace on Sunday,on Monday morning they would declare war on Pakistan. If this is the case, i fail to see any stable future for Pakistan.

Hey! PrasunDa, Wann'a know why doesn't d GOI of make all DPSU transfer their technology developed for the military use for civilan use to the pvt. companies so that they can absorb those hi-tech. for public use & also helps make our industrial base hi-tech, just as gov. of Israel did with Rafael Development Corporation(RDC) technology transfer company. As will it make good utilization of taxpayer's money. BTW,ur blog is very informative and enjoyable keep up d good work SIR!

2.The Brazilian model cant be replicated here in India. In Brazil there are lots of unused and arable land for sugarcane plantation and they also doesnt have a huge population to feed.

3.Why cant HAL license manufacture R-25 and R-29 fuel pumps at its forgery division in Blore or in Ozhar?

4.Many years ago RAC MIG had proposed to build a spare manufacturing plant here in India for catering to all sorts of spares requirements for the MiGs of IAF. Why wasnt the idea taken up then ?

5.If all Manpads had a mx range of only 4 km then whats the need for mentioning the max range of them in their respective brochures. There ought to be some significance. Giraffe radar cues the RBS 70 launchers to the direction of the threats for full optimisation of the Bolide missile's range.

6.Is RCI Imrat providing the new IIR seeker of Nag or is it being sourced from Selex EO?

7.IA wasnt satified with Namica launcher and wanted it reengineered. It still wasnt satisfied with the LT designed one. Is there any news on the Nag launcher?

8. What are the various performance limitaions imposed on F-16 add on sensors , APG-68 and ew pods. There isnt any materials on it in net. Are the PAF F-16 Soviet type monkey models with downgraded avionics and systems?

9. CCS has finally approved the China specific strik corps -
1. Besides the divisonal corps HQ in Panagarh what more units will this corps comprise?

2. CC had earlier rejected the formation of the corps and asked for greater synergy between the three services in its formation. To implement this what were the major changes to the constitution of this corps?

10.Is the final assembly of Arihant class subs at SBC Vizag and the hull portion fabrication done in 2 shifts or in just 1 shift as prevalent in govt owned shipyards.

11.Which company is conducting deep upgrade and service life extension of SeaKing mk42 ?

12. is it really woth it- using mig-21 bison as a multi role ac,strike ac with just 4 Kab totalling 2000 kgs?

Hope they make similar decisions in other ongoing crucial projects.

Hi Prasun ,

As much as I admire the thankless job that you are doing in educating us about matters related to defense fact remains that a country is only as good as it's citizens.

We Indians take tremendous pleasure in fighting among ourselves for petty reasons . No wonder this country has been invaded so many times and colonized for 200 years. We have to confront the uncomfortable truth that there is something lacking in our society that leads to this type of dysfunctional behaviour. Sooner the better .

Else , we will continue to be plundered by forces both foreign & domestic.

To RAD: The NAG never failed the tests, but the NAMICA & hence the decision was taken last year to re-engineer the NAMICA. Seeker technologies are always improving & short-range IR seekers offering high-definition target imagery is now easily available. For NLOS-BSMs like BrahMos-1 or even Prithvi-3, SAR terminal seekers offer all-weather pinpoint accuracy, something not possible with optronic seekers.

To TIN TIN: The bottom line is that prudence demands the lesser of the two evils is always the preferable option. The news-item quoted by you clearly shows that the mischief-makers (those that were shot dead) are not part of the human species especially since they violated their own holy tenets during the fasting month & therefore deserved what they got. On the other hand, in the Land of the Pure, what can possibly explain this: http://dunyanews.tv/index.php/en/Pakistan/183581-Rangers-kill-innocent-taxi-driver-in-Karachi

And why should Iran try hard yet again to be friendly to Pakistan? Aren’t they already friends & share brotherly relations since they’re all part of the Ummah? If Iran is trying hard again, then it can only mean that there has been something that went terribly wrong between the two countries in the recent past. Perhaps the Saudis, Qataris & the Khalifas of the UAE have been acting as spoilers. Shit happens!

To INDRANIL: I had explained above the fears of the MoD about allowing FDI in this sector, i.e. there will be a mass exodus of scientists, engineers & technicians from the DRDO & DPSUs to the private-sector, leaving the DRDO high-and-dry. Clearly the MoD wants to try avoiding such a nightmare scenario.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SPANKY’s BLOG/SWAROP: This was long overdue, but it still requires a lot more follow-up effort, since the Ruskies will not be in favour of such an idea because a civilian version of IL-214 will dim the marketing prospects of Sukhoi SSJ-100 Superjet regional airliner. Therefore, India should take the initiative in terms of developing an FAA- & EASA-certified civilian passenger transport/cargolifter version of the IL-214 & India should also claim all IPRs for such versions of the IL-214 MRTA.

HAT is akin to first testing-out & fine-tuning a new-model automobile in a test-track before releasing it for operational use on a daily basis by its customer. HAT for submarines therefore involves testing out all the on-board systems under controlled conditions within the harbor, following which the SAT phase begins when all such tests are repeated & validated within the deep blue seas under simulated operational conditions.

To 1978: The anger of the Afghans is very much understandable, since Pakistan has blatantly violated all Afghan IPRs by naming its ballistic missiles after Afghan chieftains/kings, such as Ghauri & Abdali. To an average Afghan, such insults are intolerable.

To BISWAJIT PATTANAIK: VMT. Had India followed the routes taken by the likes of IAI or RAFAEL or ELBIT Systems, then by now all the DPSUs would have been public-listed entities in which the Govt of India would have been a golden shareholder, thereby protecting India’s strategic interests on one hand while on the other making these DPSUs fully accountable to its shareholders & thereby making them both productive & innovative. However, to enact such far-reaching reforms requires strategic visioning—something which India’s political elite sorely lack.

To SUBIR: 2) The Brazilian model can indeed be replicated within India with ease for as long as there’s an assured supply of water, which isn’t a problem at all since all that’s reqd are a few water desalination plants in states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh. 3) Because it is uneconomical to produce them in very limited quantities. 4) Not spares manufacturing plant, but a spares stockpiling bonded warehouse, which was established in 1993 & is now known as IRAL. 5) Max range quoted in brochures does not state that the missile flies straight & level just like a crow. All missiles are fired in the direction of approaching threats. 6) Not RCI Imarat, but IRDE. 7) There are two re-engineered versions of NAMICA: one from BEL & another from L & T. Final round of user-assisted field-trials are due next month. 8) They are de-tuned versions devoid of several software enhancements. 9) What has been approved is the ESTABLISHMENT FUNDING for a functional Mountain Corps inclusive of its HQ & its various unit-formations. It will comprise two infantry divisions, an armoured brigade, one artillery division, a combat aviation brigade, & a combat engineering brigade. This is by no means a Mountain Strike Corps, which will be created in future out of an existing Corps already located in the North East. I had already explained it all in great detail in a previous thread last April that dealt with China’s ORBAT along the LAC. 10) Single-shift. The SBC in Vizag is MoD-owned so don’t expect private-sector norms to be followed there. 11) HAL. 12) MiG-21 Bison was due for decommissioning by 2011. 13) There are several low-observable features of the FGFA that have yet to be made public. That’s all that I can say as of now.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SK: VMT. Actually, reality bites when one is faced with several financial constraints & that’s precisely what has happened. Trying to re-invent the wheel therefore no longer makes any sense. This was long overdue, but it still requires a lot more follow-up effort, since the Ruskies will not be in favour of such an idea because a civilian version of IL-214 will dim the marketing prospects of Sukhoi SSJ-100 Superjet regional airliner. Therefore, India should take the initiative in terms of developing an FAA- & EASA-certified civilian passenger transport/cargolifter version of the IL-214 & India should also claim all IPRs for such versions of the IL-214 MRTA. Had written a letter to the PMO on this issue in 2007 in which I had explained all possible alternatives/options concerning the IL-214 MRTA, & how this option will be far better & cheaper than that which was proposed by NAL (& which HAL is also now opposing). Guess I’ve then had the last laugh! (LoLZZZ).

To AKHIL SURI: The formula is a simple one: back to basics (i.e. focussing on the fundamentals & grasping the essence, especially in terms of religious philosophies & not the super-duper diluted sects & cults), which in turn will lead to righteous character-building & which in turn will lead to purposeful & decisive governance of the kind witnessed during the times of Chandragupt Maurya, Ashoka the Great & Sher Shah Suri.

HI Pasun

The drdo is stating that the next version of the astra is going to have a range of 100km from the 40 km version now, how can they do that without changing the dimensions and configuration.
The russians should be told we will never buy their civilian jet firmly so as to end the speculation of clash of interests. A turbo fan version of the il-214 should be great way to start our production lines. We should make sure that the il-214 when developed can cater to a variety of roles like awacs, signit,SAR maritime, etc .
The Nirbhay missiles wings are unique in the sense that they are a single piece that flip out rather than the conventional tomahawk type , is this unique or have we taken the idea from some other missile ?.
Are the dimensions ok for sub launch, do we have the tech for that ? Russia seems to be at it again for raising the prices of the pakfa, has there been a firm deal ? what stops them from doing a vikramaditya game again after we have invested millions?.
The aad missile test fired had a russian seeker or indian one,? what about the prahaar seeker ?

If wishes were flying horses then Indian Beggars would surely ride 5 squadrons of LCA Mark-1s that too equipped with the Kaveri engines atleast after the midlife upgrade and also another 5 odd squadrons of LCA Mark 1 Lead-In-Flight-Trainers. We would have a booming indigeneous aerospace industry complete with indigenous airframes, avionics, radars, engines, etc. Also the IAF would very soon reach its combat jet squadron target of 42-45 squadrons...Dream on....

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To PRATEEK: Have already explained that above, including its composition. Two more infantry divisions & a new mountain warfare Corps HQ will soon be raised.

To SUJOY MAJUMDAR: The DF-3 site at Rub Al-Khalil (Empty Quarter) has already been decommissioned & the new facility will house conventionally armed, canister-encased DF-21C MRBMs.

To RAD: The Astra Mk2 with 100km+ range will have a totally redesigned airframe & will in all probability be ramjet-equipped as well. IL-214 MRTA’s civilian version holds great promise, no doubt about that. Nirbhay’s wing-design is derived from that of the 3M14E Klub LACM. Consequently, Nirbhay is perfectly suited for SSGNs when fired vertically. All AAD missiles fired so far have had Russian terminal seekers.

To DEFENCE & AEROSPACE: Several challenges. Weight balancing & recoil absorption for one. That’s why it is preferable to increase barrel length (calibre) of existing 120mm & 125mm barrels, followed by larger diameter barrels like 140mm.

To PINTU: Yes, both the Russians & US have claimed this to be the case in Antarctica. Antarctica is not the lost Atlantis. Atlantis was located in the Atlantic Ocean off Gibralter & was also known as ‘High Brazil’.

To SAYAN: BMCS developed by HEMRL was shown at DEFEXPO 2012 last year & I had uploaded its pix in April 2012 & they’re also there in the latest thread. One company each from Pune & Delhi are now series-producing them.

To BISWAJIT PATTANAIK: Turbomeca has not yet developed a turboprop version of the Ardiden/Shakti engine. HAL was never involved in developing this turboshaft engine. Existing Kaveri can easily be fine-tuned for use by a MALE-UAV.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To DUSHYANT HARDAHA: No, not entirely. Because when he took over as CM of Gujarat, the state he inherited was already communally polarised due to years of brainwashing of its gullible populace by the likes of the VHP & Bajrang Dal & there was nothing that he could do then to control these fanatics. The one fatal mistake NAMO did after the Godhra train-burning incident was to bring the charred dead-bodies of the victims to Ahmedabad, which only inflamed passions even further as the VHP & Bajrang Dal went totally berserk. Had this not had happened, then the law-and-order situation would have been under control. It was the communal violence that gave NAMO the crucial lever he so desperately wanted to bring the VHP & Bajrang Dal to heel & make them irrelevant in Gujarat.

To R S Swamy: 1) Prithvi-3 has already been developed & certified for use. Now, efforts are on to encase it within a cannister. 2) Close to Mach 7.5.

To SUBIR: 1) Because he’s not a qualified aviation specialist & does not comprehend the technological issues or non-negotiable operational performance parameters. 2) Yes. 3) Yes, since there’s no other choice. 4) Main problem is that of money supply. Read this: http://www.outlookindia.com/article.aspx?287020 5) Total hogwash. 6) No. 7) Such deals are never inked by either the US President or Vice-President.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SPANKY’s BLOG/SWAROP: Firstly, it is incorrect to claim as yet that the Tejas Mk1 is far superior to the MiG-21. On paper, yes, but not as a fully certified product, although there are reasons to believe that next year it will become a far superior product. Mind you, no images/photos have been released as yet showing the Tejas Mk1 getting airborne with its fully authorised offensive warload from either an air base in the deserts or from Leh. Therefore, the best alternative for the Tejas Mk1 remains its adoption in large numbers (at least 80) as a LIFT for both the IAF & IN, & not as an operational MRCA. Everyone knows that I have been advocating this for a long time now for obvious reasons. However, to say that as a consequence of this the Tejas Mk2’s R & D quantum ought to be slowed down is total balderdash & defies all logic, unless one has a hidden agenda lurking elsewhere (like promoting the F-35 JSF, for starters!). That’s because both the IAF & IN are united in their quest for the Tejas Mk2 & since the Tejas Mk2’s ASQR was finalised in late 2011 itself, R & D workshares have already been allotted by both the IAF & ADA & vendor-selection process of major sub-systems like all-new glass cockpit, aerial refuelling system, AESA-MMR, IRST sensor has already begun. If ADA manages to master the science of developing the flight-control logic & the all-new digital flight-control computer of the Tejas Mk1 by the middle of next year, then the most challenging component of R & D work reqd for the Tejas Mk2 will be resolvable by 2017 at the earliest. GE Aero Engines has already rendered valuable advice to Saab Aircraft BV for redesigning the air intakes of the Gripen NG, redesigning of the interbal engine mounts & on the probable CoG shifts & there’s no reason why similar advice cannot be sought for Tejas Mk2/LCA Navy Mk2 as well, especially since all this can be done quickly & safely at ADA’s Virtual Design Lab. In aerospace R & D parlance, all this is by no means a herculean task. As for incurring weight-savings, the Cockpit NG’s architecture will give at least 35% weight-savings & volume-savings thereby enabling the installation of the IRST sensor. Furthermore, the ELT-568 internal AESA-based jammers will offer similar weight/volume savings when one compares it with the DARE-developed internal jammer for Tejas Mk1. Further weight-savings can be achieved through usage of small-diameter PGMs, instead of the 500kg LGBs on which ADA’s present-day MTOW calculations are based for both Tejas Mk1 & tejas Mk2. Bottomline: structural modifications are far more easier to achieve, but it is mastery over flight-control logic programming & validation that consumes the greatest quantum of R & D effort.
Regarding the EMB-145I AEW & CS, all on-board mission-sensor related hardwiring was done at Embraer’s facility itself & all that which remained to be done was installation of the actual mission sensors & internal mission management consoles, all of which has already been done under a six-month schedule. Therefore, now what is being done are flight certification flights involving mission systems performance validation.
