Two More A-50EI PHALCON AEW & CS For IAF

Following a seven-year wait, India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) will later this month sign a procurement contract with Russia’s Rosoboronexport State Corp and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for two A-50EI PHALCON AEW & CS (using the IL-476-90 airframe), with each being fitted with the IAI-supplied/installed/integrated ELW-2090 mission avionics suite for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Though the MoD had negotiated and finalised a follow-on US$1.5 billion contract to acquire another three A-50EI PHALCON AEW & CS by November 2008, contract signature could not take place until officials from both Rosoboronexport State Corp and Ilyushin Finance Corp gave firm assurance to the IAF last June that a new-generation successor to the IL-76, called IL-476, featuring a fully-digital fly-by-wire flight control system, glass cockpit avionics and PS-90A-76 turbofans, was available from Russia’s Ulyanovsk-based AVIASTAR SP Aircraft Building Enterprise JSC.
Consequently, the follow-on order for two A-50EI PHALCONs was negotiated with both Rosoboronexport and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) by late last year. From the Russian side the principal industrial contractors will be AVIASTAR SP and Taganrog-based Beriev Aircraft Company. IAI will commence deliveries of the two A-50EIs from mid-2018.
Presently based at the IAF’s Agra Air Force Station as part of No.50 Squadron, alongside No.78 Squadron, which presently operates six IL-78MKI aerial refuelling tankers, the IAF’s first two A-50EI PHALCONs arrived in India on May 25, 2009 and March 25, 2010, respectively. The third platform arrived in Agra in March 2011.

The A-50EI/PHALCON’s EL/M-2075 mission avionics suite of these three PHALCONs includes the L-band active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar (comprising three antenna arrays mounted in a triangular manner) contained within a radome above the fuselage. The electronically-steered beam provides 360-degree coverage around the aircraft and it carries up to 11 mission management personnel for airspace surveillance and airborne battlespace management. BARCO of Belgium supplied the 20-inch AMLCDs for the mission management suit, with Tadiran SpectraLINK supplying the secure digital data links.

To SBM: What's on the cards? Elementary: one cannot procure 4 types of SAMs to fulfil the same role. Therefore, bulk Barak-2 procurement will take precedence & consequently, the Akash-1/2 & the SR-SAM & VSHORADS/MANPADS reqmts will be axed. The sooner everyone accepts this reality, the better! As for DEW, there's no other option since only such weapons can neutralise threats posed by tactical & mini-UAVs. The problem with the DRDO's Aditya HEL-DEW technology demonstrator is that there's as yet no target acquisition/target engagement cueing device. Elsewhere, everyone else is using derivatives of PESA-MMRs (like the Bars being used for the Pantsyr) & AESA-MMRs for target detection/acquisition/engagement (like the US & Israelis have already done) & now even derivatives of airborne IRST sensors are being tested for such purposes. Therefore, either the folks at DRDO are idiots for not thinking matters through, or are just twiddling their thumb-fingers & wasting the Indian taxpayer's money. Shit happens!!!

So, in conclusion, once again: Akash-1/2 SAM procurements will be severely curtailed & SR-SAM & VSHORADS/MANPADS projects will be scrapped for good, & instead priority will be given to Barak-2 procurement in large numbers, along with service-induction of HEL-DEWs like RAFAEL's Iron Beam. S-400 procurement is a long long way away since the version of this LR-SAM desired by the IAF has yet to emerge from Russia. I had explained all this last year itself despite all the widespread jingoism emanating from several dimwits just because the RM had uttered some senseless soundbytes. Now, as everyone can see, there's no official word from any corner concerning the S-400. Aakhir mein Doodh ka doodh aur paani ka paani ho gaya.

Is Mig-29 UPG with AESA radar an equivalent to the Rafale (with less range/payload)?

Hi Prasun,

I had posted a question to you, surprisingly it got deleted, and you forgot to answer. Ok so reposting again:

In reply to my query on "March 8, 2016 at 11:45 PM" you had replied on "March 9, 2016 at 6:22 PM". I have some questions regarding your reply:

1) In your 4th point you have mentioned "How will the spares support problems increase if the D-30s are completely done away with & use is made only of PS-90As?". While in 3rd point you mention "Existing A-50EIs have PS-90A turbofans. IL-78MKIs & IL-76MDs have D-30.". So are the existing IL76MD and IL78 going to be upgraded to PS-90 engine, otherwise the spares problem will remain.

2) Second if the MTOW is going to be increased, then is there any change to Landing gear and its fittings. If yes then that would also entail different spares and tires probably. Kindly confirm if this is the scenario.

3) Do we possess TU-204R or E-8C type aircraft for SIGINT and ELINT missions.

4) You have explained in your previous posts why IAF went with different aircrafts. My question this time is regarding Navy, why we went for two different Anti Sub a/c Tu142M and IL38s. Is it because only these were available when we had the requirement.

Santosh

@ Subho S

It is not so easy for US to wash its hand with Saudi. Since 1970's till today Oil trade is done in Dollars because of Saudi-US Agreement.

Because of Petro Dollar both this countries are able to thrive such a long time. Once Iran Agreement is done, Saudi feels US is shifting camp.

Already China-Russia started Oil trade in their currencies. If Saudi also started doing Oil trade in other Currencies, then No God can Save US.

Both US & Saudi are married couples. Both dont like each other. If they divorce both are going to loose. Same US & China are married couples. Both dont like each other but they have no other choice. Both need to leave together.

Now US main worry is sliding Dollar. Sliding dollar is double edge sword for many.

Just wait and watch the game.

Thanks

Exactly Prasunda....some people either DON'T want to learn or keep their eyes CLOSED all the time..in other words, they are what as you like to call them..IDIOTS!!

So Prasunda can we expect a DEAL with RAFAEL of Israel for the Iron Beam any time in the NEAR future like the PM Modi's visit to Israel later this year??

Have a nice day..

Sliding dollar ??? All I see is the dollar breaking all records vis-a-vis all other currencies in the world including our own !

The U.S and Saudis were never married - it was a need based partnership ( more like a mistress situation). Mistress is not as attractive any more, time to move on to greener pastures - simple as that !

The Saudis are plain stupid. They had this incredible natural resource which btw the Americans helped them develop and exploit for over 75 years now and all they have done with that money is build palaces and have done little to nothing to develop human capital and diversify their economy. Whose fault is that ? Not the Americans for sure.

Game ? What game. The only game I see playing out is being won handily by Iran in the region. Looks like game over for Saudis no matter which angle you look from.

Prasun Da,

DRDO released a tender yesterday asking for - "Integration of SIVA pod with IMR Seeker on Su-30MKI Aircraft for Captive Flight ECIL Configuration".

http://www.drdo.gov.in/drdo/tenders/viewTender.jsp?paramMicro=16329&utm_content=buffer58ddd&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

So it is clear that DRDO doesn't have the skills to bring about this integration. Will you plz elaborate what are the skills necessary to do this?

Maybe PrasunDa, you may also choose to write a blog post about the skills that DRDO needs but doesn't have.

Sujoy

Mr.Bharat Karnad has to be a certified nincompoop or an OCD victim. The way he goes on, one would have it so that the Motherland is solely dependent on the Agni V Missile.

Arpit Kanodia said...

Here what Bharat Kanard describe

"Just learned that the test firing of the canisterized Agni-5 that was earlier scheduled for yesterday and postponed virtually at the last hour, has now been cancelled altogether, at least in the present time window. This decision at the highest levels of govt was owing to Washington’s supposed allergy to rising powers displaying their distant strike capabilities. The K-4 SLBM fired from a moored underwater pontoon tube system tested March 8 was, unlike the A-5, not in a ready state of induction. A-5, hermetically sealed in a canister with a dummy warhead, was set to be launched from its mobile platform to its full range, whence the Modi PMO’s hesitation."

A-5 is in ready state of induction? LMAO.
